Course Content:

This course explores the historical dynamics of the Political Economy of Greece after World War II.

It adopts a composite theoretical approach which combines the perspectives of economics and political science to explain the postwar pattern of the Greek economy, its current condition, and its future perspectives.

The analysis focuses mainly on the exploration of the relationships that link: a) the state (politics) and the market (economy) inside the country; b) the internal (national) and the external (international) politico-economic environment; c) economic theory and economic history of Greece.

This comprehensive approach distinguishes and separately examines distinct historical phases and regimes, with their own socio-economic characteristics and subsequent politico-economic dynamics.

The recent fiscal crisis of the Greek state in the framework of the European and world economic crisis is thoroughly investigated.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon the systematic attendance and completion of the course, students will be in a position to comrehend, explain, analyse, and assess:
1) The “golden age” of the high growth rates of the greek economy (the upward phase of the long economic cycle, 1952-1972).
2) The period of the low growth rates (the downward phase of the long economic cycle, 1973-2000).
3) The period of economic convergence in the fraimework of EMU (2001-2007).
4) The current Great Depression of the greek economy (2008-2013).
