Lecturer on Contract
Dr. Christina Sakali holds a PhD in International Political Economy from the University of Macedonia, Greece. In 2019-2022, she worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher in the ERC funded research project “Property and Democratic Citizenship” at the Department of Conflict and Development Studies, Ghent University, Belgium. Her research explores the impact that property relations and institutions have on the experiences of citizenship and housing precarity, with a focus on debt relations, law, and the financialization of property. In 2017 – 2019, she coordinated the Greek research team for the purposes of a research project about the impact of the economic crisis and austerity policies on the right to food and the agrifood sector, under the collaboration of the Transnational Institute, FIAN International and Agroecopolis Hellas, and co-authored a Collective Volume/Report produced as a result of that project.
She has taught in academic institutions in Greece (University of Macedonia, University of Crete, Hellenic Open University), the UK (University of Gloucestershire) and Belgium (Ghent University) on the topics of Political Economy and Inequality, Comparative Economic Systems, History of Economic Thought, Ethical Finance and Theories of Social and Solidarity Economy. Her publications include papers in international peer-reviewed journals, chapters in books, including one by Palgrave Macmillan, reports and working papers, as well as several conference papers and public outreach articles. She is the co-founder and coordinator of the Political Economy and Law Working Group, which is part of the International Initiative for Promoting Political Economy (IIPPE). She is also a member of the local stakeholders group of the EU URBACT/ROOF program in Thessaloniki, aiming to promote sustainable urban development through innovative policies and models for social and affordable housing provision.
