The subject of the course is foreign military occupation. Using the scientific tools of history and political science we will compare and analyse military occupations form the past two centuries. Through historical examples, the goals (exploitation, regime change, “liberation”, creation of puppets – states, etc.) and the policies of the conquerors, the possible reactions of the conquered (e.g. guerrillas), the political and ramifications of occupations. Indicative list of occupations that could be studied during the course: the Napoleonic occupation of Spain, the American Civil War and Reconstruction, the German occupation of Belgium and part of France in World War I, the occupation of parts of Greece in World War I, the German occupation of Belgium, France, Norway, Greece, Yugoslavia, Poland and the USSR in World War II, the Japanese occupation of China, the Allied occupation of Germany and Japan after World War II, the Indonisian occupation of East Timor, the US occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan.

1) Introduction: Military occupations, definitions and issues
2) The evolution of the international regulatory framework of occupations
3) Factors of success/failure of military occupations
4) Administration of occupied territories and political collaboration with the occupiers
5) Resistance and armed collaboration with the occupiers
6) Financial exploitation of conquered territories and financing of occupations
7) Occupation policies (repression, inducement, accommodation, etc.)
8) “Humanitarian” occupations
9) Occupations with the aim of “liberation” or future annexation of territories
10) Occupations with ideological/racial characteristics
11) Occupations and security issues: terrorism etc
12) Presentations of student papers/Guest lecture
13) Presentations of student papers/Overview

Upon succesful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
a) understand the concept of military occupation and the theoretical issues surrounding it
b) demonstrate basic historical knowledge of the examples studied during the course
c) recognize the points of confrontation in the political, military and legal framework of a military occupation
d) describe and assess the short- and long-term social, political and military effects of a military occupation
e) distinguish and analyze the reasons for the success and failure of the military occupation in its historical context
f) interpret political and military decisions related to military occupations
