Costas Gousis was born in Volos in 1986. He is a graduate of the Law School, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), with a Master’s degree in Political Theory and Philosophy at the School of Political Sciences, AUTH. As an AHRC Techne funded doctoral student, he conducted research on immigrant activism in Greece during the last two decades and received his PhD from the University of Roehampton in 2021. His thesis explores a wide variety of immigrant activism cases including labour and feminist organising, citizenship struggles and justice campaigns. He has worked as a social researcher and as a lawyer in the field of human rights and refugee law, first as a member of the Asylum Appeals Committees of the Hellenic Republic under Presidential Decree 114/2010 and subsequently in the Legal Service of the Youth Support Centre of ARSIS in Athens, providing legal assistance for asylum seekers. After completing his dissertation, he worked for three years at Eteron – Institute for Research and Social Change, coordinating research programs aimed at documenting and analyzing the political and ideological profiles of youth, as well as trends in the fields of labor, collective action, and electoral behavior. He participates in the Research Group of the project “Demo/Crisis – Researching Democracy & Crisis” (funded by ELIDEK and implemented by Panteion University), aiming to investigate the impact of European crisis management policies on citizens’ attitudes in Greece regarding the legitimization and functioning of national democratic institutions, as well as their perceptions and degree of engagement in politics. As of May 2024, he is a member of the Management Committee of the COST Action “Data Matters: Sociotechnical Challenges of European Migration and Border Controls” (DATAMIG), an international program aimed at developing a research network coordinated by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. His work has appeared in collective volumes and peer-reviewed international and Greek scientific journals (such as Citizenship Studies, Radical Philosophy Review, Praksis, Dissonância: Critical Theory Journal etc.). He regularly participates with presentations in workshops and scientific conferences and is a member of the organizing committee of the International Conference “Historical Materialism Athens”.
