Course Content:
The course focuses on the legal and political issues arising from the development and operation of international intergovernmental organizations and the implications of their operation in international relations and international politics. In particular, it examines the operation of the major international organizations (focusing on the UN system, the Bretton Woods institutions such as the IMF and the World Bank and the WTO).It examines both the structure and institutional features as well as the functioning of these organizations in today’s world. It analyzes the political aspects governing their operation (possibly with examples and study cases) and the implications for the national context. Particular attention is given to the interaction between decisions of international organizations and the national framework. Each week the course will deal with a specific international organization, whether global (including the UN, World Bank, World Health Organization, International Labor Office and World Trade Organization) or regional (such as the African Union, the ASEAN or the OAS).
