Course Content:

The subject of this seminar is the study of the ideological and political background and development of the Greek political and party system after 1974. It approaches the style and content of the party discourses as well as discourses of organisations and movements belonging to civil society. To be concrete: party ideologies, political/social cleavages, political crisis and the general development of the party phenomenon, such as, all the peculiarities that manifest themselves in party declarations and in the political competition of the public sphere. Within such a framework of critical scrutiny of the discourse belonging to political and social forces, the main focus of the seminar are problems of continuity and discontinuity in the Greek political and party system, issues pertaining to political and party culture (modernisation/anti-modernisation, europeisation/anti-europeisation), and in particular: the populist phenomenon in all its aspects of mobilisation (far right/far left populism), the party and social reception of nationalist discourse, racism, antisemitism, conspiracy theories, in short the political ideologies, and organisational framework that make up the “stable” but also the dynamic variables of the Greek political scene and the party system.
