Course Content:
The course examines the establishment and development of the contemporary political institutions in the Middle East.
It aims at elaborating on:
a) the regional political culture;
b) the role of colonialism in the formulation of the political structures; and
c) the religious factor in the administration and politics. Moreover, the course will provide the basic knowledge for the modern history of each Middle Eastern state under examination.
Within this context, it will focus on:
a) the nation-building process;
b) Islamic fundamentalism;
c) the Palestine Question;
and d) the Western imperialism. Last but not least, special emphasis will be given in the so-called “Arab Spring” and its aftermath.

Learning Outcomes:
The students by the end of the semester will have:
1. Acquired a basic knowledge of the central ideological, historical, economic and cultural perspectives of the thematic under examination.
2. Been acquainted with the basic results of qualitative research on the political developments and social clashes in modern Middle East.
3. Practiced in the analysis and interpretation of international politics in relation to the Middle East
