Assistant Professor
Dimitris Giakoulas holds a PhD from the Department of Political Science and Public Administration of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, specializing in Foreign Direct Investment. He studied Political Science and Public Administration (BA) and European and International Studies (MSc) at the same department and has worked as a visiting PhD candidate/researcher on a fellowship at the European Institute of the London School of Economics.
His research interests focus on Foreign Direct Investment and Multinational Enterprises, Economic and Political Analysis and European and International Political Economy. In this context, he has authored scientific papers which have been presented at international scientific conferences and published in high ranked scientific journals and edited volumes.
He has taught courses in international economics, economic theory, international investment, economic development, economic history, business economics and international finance at the University of Piraeus, the University of Thessaly, Panteion University, the Agricultural University, and the University of Patras.
Since 2015 he has been working as a research associate at the Small Enterprises Institute of the Hellenic Confederation of Professionals, Craftsmen, and Merchants (GSEVEE), where he is head of the “Mechanism for the study and analysis of the economic environment of SMEs”. He is also involved in the implementation of EU funded projects as well as projects providing support services to small businesses.
He is also a member of a research team within the project “Very Small and Small Businesses and Urban Development (VeSBUD)” implemented by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and funded by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation, while in the period 2019-2021 he was the principal investigator in the research project “Greek Foreign Direct Investment and the impact of the institutional framework as a determinant” implemented by the University of Piraeus and funded by the Partnership Agreement 2014-2020.
In the past, he has participated in numerous other research projects and has worked with various consulting firms for the development of business plans and feasibility studies as well as the management of co-funded projects in the private and public sector.
