
Assistant Professor
Giorgos Katsambekis is an Assistant Professor of Comparative Politics in the School of Political Sciences at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Prior to joining Aristotle University, he served as a Lecturer at Loughborough University (2017–2022) and as a Researcher at the National Centre for Social Research (EKKE) (2022–2024).
He founded and convened the Populism Research Group at Loughborough and served as co-convener of the Populism Specialist Group of the Political Studies Association (PSA). He has participated in the research projects ‘POPULISMUS: Populist Discourse and Democracy’ (Aristotle University) and ‘Transformations of National and Popular Sovereignty in Times of Crisis’ (University of the Aegean) and has been the Co-I for the project ‘Gender (In)equality in Greek Media & Politics’ (EKKE).
His research focuses on various dimensions of comparative politics, political discourse and political ideologies, populism, political parties, the radical left, social movements, authoritarianism and its various forms, while he has focused particularly on the Greek political landscape.
His recent publications include the articles ‘Mainstreaming Authoritarianism’ (The Political Quarterly 94(3), 2023) and ‘Constructing “the people” of populism: A critique of the ideational approach from a discursive perspective’ (Journal of Political Ideologies 27(1), 2022), as well as the edited volumes Research Handbook on Populism (Edward Elgar, 2024, co-edited with Y. Stavrakakis) and The Populist Radical Left in Europe (Routledge, 2019, co-edited with A. Kioupkiolis).
